Free Access to ASTM’s Homeland Security Standards for Criminal Justice Professionals
On this page find:
Through a collaboration between NIJ and ASTM International, public safety professionals (e.g.,
law enforcement, corrections, forensics agency, emergency management) can get free access to relevant ASTM standard specifications, guides, practices and test methods.
ASTM and NIJ have created a custom portal designed to make sharing relevant data easier than ever before. This is part of a larger effort in which NIJ and ASTM International are working together to develop standards and test methods that address the needs of the public safety community.
What You Get
You will have unlimited free access to all of ASTM’s homeland security application documents. This includes standard practices, guides, test methods, and specifications in the areas of:
- Biological agent detection
- Decontamination stations
- Emergency management
- Explosive detection
- Protective equipment
See below for the
complete list of publications you will be able to access via the portal.
From within the portal you also have access to extended functions including:
- Color-coded highlighting for comparing revisions (Redlines).
- Ability to annotate within the documents for sharing online with others.
- Integration of NIJ practices and procedures into the standards.
- Linking to ASTM Membership signup and collaboration area.
How to Get Access
Register to access the portal by sending an email to
email@example.com. Be sure to:
- Send this email from a valid address demonstrating that you are a current, active member of a federal, state or local public safety agency.
Do not use a personal email address (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo).
- Include "Request access to NIJ/ASTM Standards Portal" in the subject line.
Once your agency email address has been confirmed, you will receive login credentials and instructions for the portal. Your agreement is good for one full year and can be renewed using your official agency email address.
Download a quick start guide on accessing the portal (pdf, 6 pages).
Complete List of Available Documents
The following ASTM standards are available for free to registered agencies via the ASTM-NIJ portal. Once you have registered for access, you will be able to download each document from the portal website.
