Mock Prison Riot: What's New in 2010

This NIJ Update discusses the 14th Annual Mock Prison Riot that was held on the grounds of the former West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, WV, from May 2-5, 2010. The mock prison riot presents an opportunity for manufacturers to showcase emerging law enforcement, corrections, homeland security, and military technologies for use by corrections and law enforcement personnel to test these technologies in simulated real-world scenarios. Highlights from the mock prison riot included an NIJ-funded intelligent video system for use in the detection and tracking of people, events, and behaviors across large camera networks; the depiction of how various types of data could be gathered from prison recreation yards; and the demonstration of less-lethal types of crowd control measures. The event also afforded participants the opportunity to participate in numerous training scenarios that allowed them to see, feel, and deploy the new technologies highlighted by the manufacturers. This update also discusses the various workshop sessions that were held during the 4 days of the technology showcase. Attendance at this event is only open to active or retired law enforcement and corrections practitioners, support personnel, and active or retired military, and is free for participants, exhibitors, and observers.
