Abstract

The investigator uses WebCase's evidence-collection console to record and manage online investigative activity. The saved data are hashed and stored in a secure environment within the tool. Reports based on the collected evidence can then be printed or published to CD/DVD for distribution. WebCase enables its users to search for, collect, preserve, and report any and all online data. The performance testing confirmed the aforementioned manufacturer claims for WebCase. The WebCase software captured online chat conversations, Web pages, and social networking sites as they appeared at the time an investigator viewed them. WebCase uses a hash algorithm in order to ensure the integrity of evidence collected in a case. The installation and use of the software is simple. The WebCase program successfully generated an easy to read HTML report that can be copied to CD, DVD, or other media. The test bed configuration is described, and the testing results are reported for the three tests that examined WebCase standard operation and evidence integrity. Extensive figures
