The seven articles of this issue focus on reports of research funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and policy perspectives promoted by the NIJ.
Abstract
"Solving Sexual Assaults: Finding Answers Through Research" presents research-based recommendations for the management of untested sexual assault kits regarding DNA testing according to priorities based on case characteristics. "Collecting DNA From Arrestees: Implementation Lessons" reports on a study that examined how key provisions of State arrestee DNA-collection legislation influence activities associated with DNA collection and analysis. "Preventing Children's Exposure to Violence: The Defending Childhood Initiative" reports on the features and progress of the U.S. Justice Department's Defending Childhood Initiative, which is designed to help communities, develop, test, and evaluate strategies for determining what works in reducing the number of children exposed to violence in their homes, schools, and communities. "To Err Is Human: Using Science to Reduce Mistaken Eyewitness Identifications in Police Lineups" reviews the findings of studies that have compared the reliability of eyewitness identifications of suspects in "sequential" and "simultaneous" lineups. "Sleep Disorders, Work Shifts and Officer Wellness" reports on two recent studies that examined the impact of sleep and work schedules on the health, safety, and performance of police officers. "In Search of a Job: Criminal Records as Barriers to Employment" provides guidance to employers and job applicants with an arrest record regarding the implications of equal opportunity employment. "The Economist's Guide to Crime Busting" presents three proposals for controlling crime that focus on prevention rather than the reactive punishment of incarceration.
