Digital Imaging for Safe Schools: Quick Reference Guide for Digital Imaging

The five basic steps of digital photography are: (1) check the camera; (2) check the lighting; (3) frame the shot; (4) capture the images; and (5) save the images. A list of necessary equipment is presented and readers are advised to identify a team leader and assign three positions: photographer, recorder, and facilitator. The recorder is responsible for maintaining photo logs and map coordinates while the facilitator is responsible for route planning and the details of the set-up and break-down. During the shoot, cameras should be securely mounted onto a tripod with a clean lens and a fully charged battery. Outside photography should ideally occur on an overcast day while inside photography should be positioned in a room with plenty of light and minimal shadow area. Advice is offered for framing the shots and for capturing the images using two processes: (1) a 360-degree lens process, and (2) photo-stitching. Tips are provided for planning the shoot, conducting fieldwork, and record keeping. Glossary
