The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS), the centralized information resource of the National Institute of Justice, provides a variety of services that can enhance police executives' professional development and management decisionmaking.
Abstract
The NCJRS computerized information data base covers a broad range of criminal justice interest areas, including law enforcement, crime prevention, corrections, courts, and juvenile justice. The data base currently contains summaries of more than 80,000 domestic and foreign research reports, books, and articles. Persons can access the data base by calling the toll-free NCJRS number. Assistance is provided by information specialists in various criminal justice fields. Other NCJRS services are the publication of 'NIJ Reports,' a bimonthly journal of news and announcements pertaining to criminal justice; the issuing of 'Books in Brief,' 4-page summaries of significant criminal justice publications; and topical searches that develop a list of documents on particular topics. In addition to the general data base on criminal justice, NCJRS collects specialized information on juvenile justice, alternative dispute resolution modes, and justice statistics.
