Congratulatory Remarks on the Occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the Korean Institute of Criminology

May 30, 2019

Hello.  I am David Muhlhausen, Director of the National Institute of Justice in the United States Department of Justice.

It is my pleasure to send my congratulations to President In Sup Han and the Korean Institute of Criminology for 30 years of accomplishments in advancing law enforcement and the administration of justice.
The National Institute of Justice and the Korean Institute of Criminology are both committed to the same goals of improving knowledge and understanding of crime and justice issues.  Our Institutes support research that is critical to improving public safety and the criminal justice systems in both of our nations.

I am proud that our two Institutes also work together as members of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program Network.  Our international cooperation is particularly important in a world where criminal activity extends beyond the boundaries of any one nation.

In 2018, the National Institute of Justice also celebrated a milestone, its 50th anniversary.  After 50 years, it was a time for us to look back at what we had accomplished, but also to look forward and chart our course into the future.

It was an opportunity for us to recommit ourselves to the principles of providing policymakers and practitioners with the best available evidence to make decisions, and building knowledge that advances both science and practice.  I am confident that the Korean Institute of Criminology is similarly committed to carrying out rigorous research and supporting evidence-based practices and policies.

In December of 2017, it was my honor to visit the Korean Institute of Criminology.  I was able to learn about the good work that the institute is doing.

With over 1,500 research publications to date, you have accomplished a great deal.  I am sure that as you take this moment to celebrate your many accomplishments over the past 30 years, you will also look forward, as we did, and see that we still face many challenges ahead.

Our work now is more important than ever.  So, once again, congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the Korean Institute of Criminology.  I look forward to our continued work together.
